Teach your students to independently check their own writing with this writing checklist! In this packet, you will find writing checklist cards for your writing bulletin board, 14 different kinds of writing paper with two types of lines, a complete writing checklist to use with other forms of writing paper, as well as writing goal labels and writing goal trackers.

Also includes an EDITABLE PowerPoint and PDF file, so that you can add your own checkpoints and clip art! The PDF file contains embedded fonts, meaning you can simply type in your checkpoints once and they will automatically auto-populate onto each of the papers.

The PDF file does not contain clip art. If you would like to add your own checkpoints with your own clip art, you will need to use the editable PowerPoint file. You can download KG Primary Whimsy and KG Second Chances for free to use with the PowerPoint file.

This is meant to be a “growing” checklist, meaning that you will only start with one item on the checklist and add more as the year progresses! Once I’ve introduced the first item on the checklist, I add it to my “Writing Checklist” bulletin board. The students will use the corresponding writing paper.

The order that I introduce each checklist item is as follows:

I can label my picture.
I can stretch out the words.
I can make finger spaces.
I can spell the word wall words.
I can start with a capital letter.
I can use lowercase letters in my sentence.
I can capitalize/captalise the word “I.”
I can end with a . , ! , or ?
I can write 3 parts.
I can use my best handwriting.

Plus, you can also use this display for individual student goals! Simply have the students select a writing goal. Then, they will clip a clothespin with their name on it to the edge of the selected goal. As they achieve that goal, they will move their clip to a new goal.

Print the goal labels on Avery labels size 1” x 2 5/8”. The students will use these on their “Writing Goals” sheet. Once the students have selected their goal, give them the corresponding label to adhere to their goal sheet. As they achieve that goal and choose a new goal, give them a new corresponding label. They will reference this sheet during Writing Workshop.

I have also included a “Writing Goal Tracker” for you to use. Simply choose the one that works best for you, copy one for each student, and attach the goal label.

I hope your students love using the writing checklist and goal tracker!
