These Valentine's Day reading passages will get your students to USE the text and PROVE their answers! This resource is NOW DIGITAL, too! Included in this special edition reading pack for comprehension and fluency are 10 text-based evidence passages with a Valentine's Day theme! You'll receive a PDF file in order to print the passages AND a link to add the passages to your Google Drive. Each passage has been converted to Google Slides and is INTERACTIVE with MOVEABLE clip art and highlight strips! Each of the 10 informational text passages will keep your readers excited while they practice important reading skills such as comprehension strategies, fluency, vocabulary skills, written responses, and more!

With the introduction of the Common Core standards, comes a big shift in students being able to not only comprehend text but use and state evidence directly from the text to support their understanding. These passages allow your students to build and practice this skill in a fun, engaging manner!

With each interactive reading passage, students will read the passage three times for fluency. They keep track of the amount of times they read the passage (optional). The consistent format of the passages guide your students through the process of looking back into the text to support their comprehension and understanding with text-based evidence. Students will have a blast using their crayons to highlight and look for evidence! Finally, students practice responding to the text through a Read and Respond activity. These response questions cover many big comprehension areas such as text-to-self connections, questioning skills, compare and contrast, vocabulary skills, reflection and opinion, and main idea and details.

HOW CAN I USE THESE WITH MY STUDENTS?
These passages are great to use in a whole group setting, small group setting, RTI, intervention classrooms, center work, or as independent work within the classroom OR in Google Slides™. Bring Valentine's Day into your small group setting and add some FUN to your reading groups!

WHAT ALL IS INCLUDED IN MY DOWNLOAD?
  • A PDF which has instructions, ideas, suggestions, and printable passages
  • A link in the PDF that allows you add the passages to your Google Slides™ and share them with your students (via Google Classroom™ or another secure platform that you use for distance learning with your students)

WHO WERE THESE READING PASSAGES CREATED FOR?
The passages are written within a second and third grade Lexile reading range, making them perfect for first grade stretch texts or first grade students reading above grade level, second grade students, and third grade independent reading, below-target third grade readers, at-risk fourth grade students, intervention students, and small group settings. PLEASE NOTE: It is very important that when we are using reading material, we think of the specific readers and their needs, and not necessarily the "grade level" of a passage. Our readers grow at their own pace.

This edition contains topics that integrate many science and social studies concepts, saving you time and resources! Practicing fluency and comprehension has never been so fun for students – and easy for educators!

HOW CAN I SHARE THESE WITH MY STUDENTS FOR DISTANCE LEARNING?
  • Copy the specific passage that you need and share it with your students.
  • Share the entire presentation of all passages with your students and let them complete the activities all at once. (I advise that you let your students know how many or what titles you would like them to complete per week.)
  • Create a folder or topic in your Google Classroom™ and allow students/parents to access the passages they would like to work on for choice (This option is nice if you are using the passages as supplemental/optional/extra at-home work.)
