This winter-themed unit has activities for blending and segmenting words and beginning sounds. The unit contains 4 different literacy activities that could be used for centers or for small groups.

Segmenting/Blending Words

There are four different winter themed versions of this game. To play the games, the children slide theme-related clip art or other tiny objects onto a game board as they segment the sounds and then blending them together to make the words. All 3 have a CVC version and a version with phonemes that require multiple letters. There is also a recording page for each game if you wish to use the phonics skill of associating a letter or group of letters for the sounds.

Mystery Word

There are three different pockets with a winter theme. Each pocket is double-sided. The teacher will slide the words out of the pocket to display the letter. As this is done, the children will blend the sounds to create the word. All words in this section are words and each sound may require more than one letter.

Color a Beginning Sound

For this activity, the children will match pictures by beginning sounds in this fun, interactive game.

Puzzle Words

There are 8 different winter-themed puzzles. As the children segment the sounds, they slide the three parts of the puzzle together to create the winter image. Then, they blend the sounds together to say the word. There are two versions of this game…a CVC version and a CVCe version. There is also a recording page for each game if you wish to use the phonics skill of associating a letter or group of letters for the sounds.

Themes include: Christmas, Winter-Snowmen, Polar Animals, Valentines
