Different Uses for Cutouts in the Classroom

Cutouts are one of the most beloved classroom decor products, and it's easy to see why! Not only are they adorable, but they are also one of the simplest ways to boost your whole classroom aesthetic! But did you know that they offer so much more than just being cute decor? Cutouts can be used in a variety of creative ways that go beyond decoration—helping with teaching, classroom management, and even student engagement. Let's explore some of the many ways you can use cutouts to add both beauty and function to your classroom!

Different Uses for Cutouts in the Classroom

1. Decor

Bow cutouts

Of course, we all know that cutouts are an easy way to elevate your classroom’s look, whether you're upgrading your current theme, decorating for a holiday, or creating a seasonal vibe. But do you know all the places you can decorate with them? Well, that’s actually a trick question because the answer is—anywhere!  However, some of our favorite spots include bulletin boards, doors, and windows. We also love the idea of stringing them together to create garlands that can hang just about anywhere in the room, or having them stand alone on mini frames or clips!

2. Line Up Spots

Are your students always in a rush to line up? Or maybe you teach preschool or kindergarten, and your students aren’t even sure what “lining up” means yet! Cutouts are an excellent tool to use for line-up markers. By placing them along the floor, you can create a fun and organized spot for each student to stand, making it clear where they need to be. This simple step can help reduce crowding and promote positive behavior, especially when lining up for transitions or activities!

The beauty of cutouts is that they’re incredibly versatile and can be tailored to suit your classroom’s needs. For example, if you have different table groups, you could assign each group a unique cutout design. Maybe your "Brown Bows" group lines up on the brown bow markers, while the "Smiley Face" group uses the smiley face markers. This approach not only helps students form a line, but it also makes the process more engaging, giving them a fun visual cue. You can customize it however works best for your style and your students, making it an effective and personalized classroom management tool! Tip: Use clear packing tape over the top of your cutouts to secure them to the floor. This will prevent them from peeling up when little shoes step on them!

Cutouts are a fantastic way to make student identification both functional and fun! Create personalized name tags for desks, lockers, cubbies, book bins—basically anything that needs a label—by using cutouts in a variety of styles. They’re also perfect as bus tags! For students who are new to taking the bus, cutouts help them easily remember their bus information, and they make it clear to bus drivers and teachers where to guide them, ensuring they get to the right bus safely.

5. Classroom Games

Get creative with cutouts in classroom games! They’re a perfect substitute for paper, index cards, or sticky notes because you can easily print as many as you need and write on them! Cutouts add an interactive element to learning—they’re much more engaging than a simple piece of paper, and you can use different styles for different items. For example, you could write sight words or heart words on them, or incorporate them into interactive activities like memory matching games, scavenger hunts, or trivia challenges. Cutouts are a great way to turn learning into play. With their vibrant designs, they make every game more exciting while still serving as an educational tool!
