Help build phonemic awareness, decoding skills and reading fluency with these digital & printable CVC word activities! Oftentimes, students have difficulty orally “stretching out” and blending CVC words. I have found that using color-coded CVC word and picture cards help students identify the beginning, middle, and ending sounds; therefore, making it easier for students to segment and blend each CVC word. Being able to easily segment CVC words and blend sounds is crucial for successful decoding! Plus, the color-coding helps with directionality!

Three levels of CVC Sliders are included so that you can easily differentiate for your learners. The slides are available in PowerPoint and Google Slides, as well as with and without sound. Over 100 CVC words are included!

Each digital CVC Slider has five slides:

  1. Picture
  2. Green dot for beginning sound
  3. Yellow dot for middle sound
  4. Red dot for ending sound
  5. Full word with arrow for blending

Each digital CVC Boxer includes:

  1. Picture
  2. Sound boxes
  3. Green dot for beginning sound
  4. Yellow dot for middle sound
  5. Red dot for ending sound
  6. Arrow for blending

HOW TO USE THE DIGITAL CVC WORD ACTIVITIES:

Use the slides during whole group instruction, morning meeting or guided reading. Simply make a copy and project the slides.

Remind the students that green is the beginning sound, yellow is the middle, and red is the ending sound. Green means “go and stretch it out.” Yellow means “say the sounds slowly.” Red means “stop at the end of the word.” The color-coded letters and dots help with reading left to right.

There are five slides for each CVC Slider: picture, beginning sound, middle sound, ending sound and full word. Have the students say the sound of each letter. When the arrow is revealed, the students will blend the sounds together.

For the CVC Boxers, the students will push up the green chip as they say the beginning sound, the yellow chip as they say the middle sound, and the red chip as they say the ending sound. They will push one chip for each phoneme. After pushing all of the chips up and saying all three phonemes, the arrow will be revealed so that they can blend the sounds together.

HOW TO USE THE PRINTABLE CVC WORD ACTIVITIES:

Use the CVC Slider cards alone, or with a CVC bead slider. Have the students touch the color coded dots and say the sound of each letter. Remind them that green is the beginning sound, yellow is the middle, and red is the ending sound. The color coded letters help with reading left to right. If you are using the CVC bead slider, the students will slide one bead for each phoneme. After sliding all three beads and saying all three phonemes, they will push the beads back and say the word. Use the word cards with pictures to provide extra support.

For the CVC Boxers, use the cards with red, yellow and green markers, such as bingo chips, linking cubes, or gem stones. Have the students place the colored markers in the appropriate colored circle. Remind them that green is the beginning sound, yellow is the middle, and red is the ending sound. Green means “go and stretch it out.” Yellow means “say the sounds slowly.” Red means “stop at the end of the word.” The color coded letters help with reading left to right. The students will push the green chip down as they say the beginning sound, the yellow chip as they say the middle sound, and the red chip as they say the ending sound. They will push one chip for each phoneme. After pushing all of the chips down and saying all three phonemes, they will slide their finger along the black arrow and say the word.

These cards can also be used with magnetic letters or letter tiles. Simply place the letters inside the appropriate circle. Then, push down one letter for each phoneme as described above. After pushing each letter and saying all three phoneme, the students will slide their finger along the black arrow and say the word.

For the CVC Puzzles, give the students a select number of cards. I usually give them a set of word family cards, one word for each vowel, or a few of the same vowel. This way they do not become overwhelmed with too many cards and can easily focus on assembling the cards. Remind them that green is the beginning sound so this card will go first in the puzzle, yellow is the middle sound so this card will go in the middle of the puzzle, and red is the ending sound so it will be the last card in the puzzle. After they have correctly assembled a word, have them touch each letter and say the beginning, middle, and ending sounds. Green means “go and stretch it out.” Yellow means “say the sounds slowly.” Red means “stop at the end of the word.” The color coded letters help with reading left to right. After saying all three phonemes, they will slide their finger under the letters from left to right and say the word.
